Training Objectives

Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Primary Education Major implements the educational principles and policies of the party and the state and adheres to the school-running features of Jimei University, which establishes itself in the Tan Kah Kee Spirit and cultivates talents with the personality of sincerity and perseverance. Under the concept of holisitc education, this major is based in Fujian Province, radiates across the country, and is oriented to the cultivation of high-quality innovative professionals with firm beliefs, noble teacher’s virtues and sound qualities. Those professionals can meet the needs of the state and the society as well as the development of primary education, with their solid professional knowledge, broad disciplinary perspectives and innovative spirits, pioneering consciousness, advanced educational philosophy, outstanding teaching skills. Students fostered by the college are also good at practice and reflection, and are capable of primary education teaching, practice, management, research and other work in fields like related education industry development.

Expected development goals of graduates after five years

1. Having the personality of sincerity and perseverance . Students majoring in primary education will have noble moral character and teachers’ ethical belief. They can establish correct outlook on world and life and core values of society. Being patriotic and law-abiding,they practice the school motto “Chengyi(sincerity and perseverance) named by the school founder Tan Kah Kee. Cheng means sincerely thinking of the country, seeking truth from facts, and being selfless; Yi means doing things with perseverance and striving hard.

2. Education feelings. Take “being teachers with moral excellence in the new era” as the goal, and “cultivating people through moral education” as the responsibility; Understand and practice Tan Kah Kee's ambition of serving the country through education; Ardently Love primary school education and respect children with compassion, patience, sense of responsibility.

3. Discipline accomplishment. Have basic theoretical knowledge of pedagogy, psychology, management, literature or mathematics involved in primary education, form a certain theoretical knowledge system and master certain scientific research methods.

4. Teaching and management ability. Have the teaching ability of many primary school courses and excellent teaching ability of one major subject. Have the ability of class management and comprehensive education in and out of class. Be able to reflect on the phenomenon or problem of school education and carry out basic research.

Graduation Requirements

According to the professional standards of primary school teachers, this major firmly implements the guidelines of practicing teachers' ethics, learning to teach, learning to educate and learning to develop to formulate the following graduation requirements:

1. Teachers’ moral standards. Actively practice the socialist core values, and enhance the ideological, political, theoretical and emotional identity of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Carry out the party's educational policy, study the spirit of Tan Kah Kee, the school motto of “Chengyi” and take moral cultivation as duty. Abide by the professional ethics of primary school teachers, have the awareness of teaching according to law, and aspire to become a good teacher with ideals and beliefs, moral sentiment, solid knowledge and benevolence.

2. Education feelings. Learn from Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s deeds of serving the country through education, experience lofty educational feelings of teachers, have the willingness to teach, agree with the significance and professionalism of teachers’ work,and have positive emotion, correct attitude and values. Respect students’ personality with humanistic and scientific spirit, and work carefully and patiently with love, responsibility and dedication. Be a guide for students to temper their character, impart knowledge, innovate their thinking and teach them how to dedicate to the motherland.

3. Discipline accomplishment. Have a certain interdisciplinary literacy in Humanities and science. Master the basic knowledge, principles and skills of the subject, and understand the basic ideas and methods of the subject knowledge system. Understand the basic knowledge, principles and skills of part-time teaching subject, have certain basic knowledge of other subjects, and have a certain understanding of learning science-related knowledge. Understand the value of subject integration in primary education, the connection between the taught subject and other subjects, as well as the relationship between social practice and primary school students' life practice.

4. Teaching ability. Students should have excellent teaching ability which is embodied in the educational practice. Based on the curriculum standards of the subject taught and the physical and mental development and cognitive characteristics of primary school students, graduates are expected to use knowledge of the subject taught, information technology to conduct design, implementation and evaluation of teaching, so as to gain teaching experience,possess basic teaching skills and innovative thinking, and have good teaching ability, certain teaching research ability.

5. Class management. Students are required to learn class management. It embodies the concept of putting moral education first, understanding the principles and methods of moral education in primary schools. They are also required to master the working rules and basic methods of class organization and construction. They can enhance “leadership”, participate in the organization and guidance of moral education, mental health education and other educational activities in the class teachers’ work practice training, and gain positive experience.

6. Comprehensive education. Students are required to learn the concept of holistic education to educate people. It is embodied in the understanding of the physical and mental development of primary school students and the law of fostering education. Understand the value of discipline education can help students organically combine discipline teaching to carry out education activities.
